This lesson was designed to introduce magical realism to students through film clips. A thorough slideshow explains how various clips from Big Fish (2003), Edward Scissorhands (1990), and Stranger Than Fiction (2006) demonstrate the principles of magical realism. A detailed handout is included for students to record their findings and make connections. Finally, a thorough teacher guide is included, as well as several supplementary clips suggested for those who wish to extend the lesson.
Please note, film clips available online have been embedded into the powerpoint, but some are unavailable online or may have been taken down. It is suggested to have access to all three films in DVD or streaming form to teach the full lesson.
This resource supplements my Short Fiction Lesson on Magical Realism for AP Literature and other advanced literature students.
