Introduce students to the rise of nation-states and centralized governments as the Middle Ages came to an end. Students then read about a conflict that King John in England faced and discuss what his best solution would be. I used speech bubbles and had students do a "silent discussion" in which students read and responded to one another's answers. However, you could also have a normal class discussion.
After, students discuss King John's options introduce them to how the nobility used the Magna Carta to limit his power and the development of a parliament in England. Students then write a paragraph and argue whether these were good solutions for the problems England faced.
