This is an activity for U.S. History students based on the song "The English Heritage". This lesson includes 3 pages, one student handout of the lyrics with blank spaces for some of the key words, one copy of the lyrics with the missing answers in BOLD TYPE, and a list of the missing words in a Word Bank. I use this song "The English Heritage" from the Professor Presley History Rocks CD (available on TPT and ITunes) to introduce the students to the idea that the Colonists in the British Colonies were greatly influenced by the British and their key documents such as the Magna Carta and the English Bill of Rights, along with the Mayflower Compact. The students listen to the song twice and try to see if they can fill in all of the missing words. These documents are typically part of the State Standards and there are often questions related to these documents on the standardized tests that students take at the end of the year. By introducing the Unit with a song, and then using the song as a reminder of these topics throughout the school year, the students have a much higher retention of important topics and themes from U.S. History. In the weeks leading up to the Standardized testing I play the various songs from the album, 1 per day as a way to remind students of the topics they have learned throughout the year. Students always tell me after the STAR TEST they got a lot of questions correct because of our use of the songs during the course of the year. Plus it is a lot of fun for the students to have some rockin' music in the classroom.
