The full text of the 1215 version of Magna Carta as translated into modern English by the British Library.
A number of study helps are incorporated into the handout to help students make sense of the document. Footnotes that provide additional information, including explanations of the years mentioned in the charter’s text, which clauses were included in or omitted from subsequent versions, and which clauses remain in force to the present. Clauses are divided into the numbered order later applied to the charter.
The handout is designed with classroom needs in mind. The text is set in easy-to-read, 11-point type. Lines of text are numbered for easy reference in classroom discussion. A lined section on the right side of the page provides space for the reader to take notes. (These lines use the same spacing as college-ruled notepaper.) The handout is optimized for black-and-white printing and to save printer/photocopier ink/toner to reduce your printing costs.
The document's title as well as country and year of publication are clearly indicated, with page numbers and the document's title on all pages to help students keep the handout organized. Space is provided for students to write their name on their copy in the upper right-hand corner of the first page.
