This lab is a classic! Students will be working in small groups to watch a chemical reaction occur before their excited eyes! The lab starts with preliminary questions that get them thinking about Magnesium. After they burn the Magnesium (the burning of the Magnesium does not take long at all) they will answer a few analysis questions regarding the reaction they just witnessed. This lab is always a total HIT with my 8th graders, although this would be fun in any chemistry class. If you feel nervous about handing over the power to your students on this one, it can be done as a demo and they may still fill out the entire lab before and after the demo. Remember to wear safety goggles on this one!
