Are your students learning about magnetic repel and attraction? This magnetic invention STEAM and STEM challenge provides a hands-on learning approach to understanding magnetism! This project requires students to modify a current product used in everyday life to help make tasks easier. The activity incorporates the engineering design cycle and includes a leveled text. Students use their observations to write a submission report on their invention before a classroom showcase. Writing prompts round out this jammed packed set!

The presented scenario sets students up to create their magnetic invention.
Engineering Design Cycle Reflection:
Students will reflect about what they did as they worked through each part of the engineering design cycle.
Engineering Design Cycle:
Students will first investigate three magnetic enhancement possibilities before beginning their invention. Then they will reflect about what they did as they worked through each part of the engineering design cycle.
Design & Testing Page:
After students have designed and constructed their magnetic invention, they will test their product and draw conclusions, making modifications as necessary.
Engineering Submission Report:
Students will complete a one-page report detailing their invention and conclusion.
The grading rubric allows teachers to assess how students used and applied their knowledge of magnets to explain how they invented a magnetic solution to aid in everyday tasks.
Science Leveled Passage: Medical Magnets: What is an MRI? 3 Leveled Texts
Students will read a leveled passage about MRIs- Magnetic Resonance Imagine, and answer questions based on their understanding.
2 Venn Diagrams:
Students will use data and observation from their magnet STEAM to complete the Venn Diagrams.
2 Informational Writing Prompts:
Students draw on knowledge of magnets gained during the STEAM project and further research to complete the writing tasks.
2 Show What you Know: Magnetic Task & Writing Prompts
Students will draw on knowledge of magnets and complete a magnetic task before writing about their observation and drawing conclusions
