The force produced by a magnet reaches some distance from the magnet. This is why a paperclip placed one or two centimeters from a magnet will jump towards it. The pattern in which the force reaches through space is called a magnetic field. Your students will see this pattern by sprinkling iron filings on a piece of paper over a magnet. This lesson plan consists of magnetic artwork, and two experiments involving magnetic strength and blocking magnets. Teacher notes and answer key included.
