Making Words with magnetic letters or letter cards is one of the most versatile that I have ever used in my 28 years of teaching. If you are looking for a way for your students to practice sight words, phonics, adding prefixes/suffixes, changing out a beginning, middle, or end of a word to create a new one, or making multi-syllabic words, this is an activity that you will want to check out.
Simply post the phrase found at the top of your selected page, using magnetic letters on a board, magnetic surface, cookie tray etc. I choose to use blue consonants and red vowels which is why the colored clip art corresponds but you can really use your favorite set as well. Students create new words using the magnetic letters on the board and record them on the included sheet. (Colored and B&W versions included) You can guide them to change out a beginning or ending sound, vowel sounds, create word families, rhyming words, sight words, change short to long vowels by adding silent e, add a prefix/suffix, or anything else your students are practicing. This variety is what makes this lesson so VERSATILE across the grade levels. I have two additional rules...first, you can not use a word that was originally posted at the top of the page. Sometimes, they will come back to that word after the letters are all shuffled. Second, is that I encourage them to have three or more letters in a word. Sometimes a truly emergent reader will want to put "a" or "I". That call is up to you. You can let that slide if you are working on building confidence for him/her.
Included in this you will find six lessons that encompass a November theme. The phrases to post on your magnetic board using your favorite set of magnets are:
Fall Back Spring Ahead
Cast Your Vote- Election Day
National Pizza Day- Nov. 12
National Pickle Day- Nov. 14th
Honor a Veteran- Veteran's Day
All of these lessons come in a colored version should you choose to create centers with them as well as B&W versions for reproducing for your class. There is a second sheet included in case your students love this activity as much as mine do. You will also find letter cards so that you make make individual sets for your students should you prefer to use those instead of magnetic letters.
You will find your students practicing all types of word skills when using this activity regularly and asking for it again and again. Subs too will love you if you leave this activity in your absence. And your kiddos will remain engaged and interested in participating.
