Here’s a quick and easy way to get your students to write poetry. Use the free website magnetic.poetry.com to write your poem, then transfer it to a poster complete with a thematic illustration. On magneticpoetry.com you’ll find banks of words that can be clicked and dragged to a central window where you can rearrange them into a poem. Even though students are limited to the number and kind of words they can use, this will not affect creativity. On the contrary - this will stimulate their critical thinking and make them condense their thoughts into more intense images and emotions. I’ve included step-by-step directions for writing a poem and for creating a poster. My directions include screen shots, student handouts, samples of poems, and grading suggestions. I’ve used this lesson in the 4th grade and continued it into the 8th grade. This is a 9-page download in a PDF.
