This inquiry-based mini unit helps students develop a conceptual understanding of magnetism. 4 activities are included along with an interactive bingo game to review vocabulary.
Activity 1: Investigates different magnetic and non-magnetic materials. Students are able to clarify their understanding that not all metals are magnetic.
Activity 2: Students investigate the strengths of different types of magnets. Students also begin to notice where magnets are strongest.
Activity 3: Students investigate the poles of bar magnets and use iron filings to discover magnetic fields
Activity 4: Students build their own electromagnets and then make adjustments to strengthen them. Appropriate for grades 3-6 and aligned to NGSS.
