The Magnets lesson is a SmartBoard instructional presentation in line with the 2nd Grade SOL’s for the state of Virginia
Force, Motion, and Energy
2.2 The student will investigate and understand that natural and artificial magnets have certain
characteristics and attract specific types of metals. Key concepts include
a) magnetism, iron, magnetic/nonmagnetic, poles, attract/repel; and
b) important applications of magnetism including the magnetic compass.
This lesson focuses on the properties of magnets. It includes: a Smartboard presentation which overviews the textbook chapter about magnets. It includes terms associated with magnets (attract, pole, repel, magnetic field, and compass). There are slides explaining each principle, household magnets, and more. There is also a SmartBoard activity on identifying magnetic vs. non-magnetic items The activity is on a white background so that they can be given as classwork, homework, or accompanying supplement to the presentation.
