This is a terrific way to help young students understand the concepts of addition and subtraction by acting out "scenarios", which are actually addition and subtraction word problems. The whole class can participate. Each student makes their own mailbox (explicit instructions with photos included) and they address their own pieces of "personal mail". (templates for correctly addressing envelopes are included) Also, everyone makes a piece of bulk mail (junk mail, ads).
Those are all of the props needed to act out each scenario (word problem). There are "delivery job tickets" in this package that should be printed out. These tell the acting "mail person" what to deliver and where to deliver it. The mail recipients get involved "in the act" also. As they empty their mailboxes, they reveal the answers to the word problems (scenarios) .This hands on activity will really hold the students' attention! There are 6 different scenarios with blanks for numbers of pieces of mail and the names of addressees. Teachers can fill in the blanks with varied information creating lots of different "delivery jobs" so that everyone can participate!
