Product Description

Students often have a difficult time trying to determine what the main idea or theme of a piece of text is.

In this main idea resource, your students will be exposed to ways that they can learn how to determine the main idea of a non-fiction text or fiction text (theme/main idea) by following a few steps and asking themselves pertinent questions.

Included in this set for you:

Mini posters to teach main idea: mini anchor chart and poster to show students how to find the main idea of non-fiction and fiction text. (The main idea drives the text.)

Concept mapping: printables for students to practice finding the main idea in both non-fiction and fiction pieces that you provide. (Classroom or library books or parts of books)

20 MAIN IDEA task cards for students to work independently, as part of a work on reading center or in small groups/partners. Task cards ask students to choose the best answer A or B. (answer key provided) 12 are non-fiction and 8 are fiction.

1 puzzle activity where students identify supporting details/events on the puzzle pieces and the main idea around the puzzle. This is a very versatile activity.

1 3D car craftivity where students cut out the car, color and write the main idea on the car. The wheels serve as supporting details. This car can be hung with string so that everyone can see all 4 supporting details.
