The Puzzling Main Idea contains directions and materials needed for 5 different Main Idea Activities. They are tons of fun, hands-on, and a perfect continuation to Main Idea mini-lessons! The activities encourage whole class, partner/group, and independent work/critical thinking! If followed in order, the activities teach Main Idea first in a more concrete manner, allowing children to slowly be able to apply their new skills to more difficult tasks, and eventually to text.
Activity 1-The Important Book
This activity goes along with The Important Book by Margaret Wise Brown. A great read! The Important Book introduces or reviews the most basic concept of Main Idea. Students create pages for their own "Classroom Important Book".
Activity 2- A Puzzling Demonstration
The class explores pieces of a detailed puzzle, predicting the puzzle's main idea. This is a whole class demonstration which prepares students for the next activity which encourages more independence.
Activity 3- The Puzzling Main Idea
Students work with a partner and explore a puzzle of their own, again predicting the main idea. They will trace puzzle pieces, describe them, record predictions, and more.
Activity 4- Main Idea Mystery Bags
Paper bags are filled with a set of cards with details on them. The class needs to solve the "Mystery Main Idea" of each set.
Activity 5-Students apply what they have learned about Main Idea to a text. Students create their own Main Idea Puzzle and swap it with a partner.
