This packet of main idea activities and printables is designed to help your students grasp main idea in non-fiction texts. This activity pack takes a whole new approach to learning main idea, starting with pictures and then moving into text. Finding a main idea in a large text requires some abstract thinking. This product will help you introduce the idea in a more concrete way before moving to the abstract.
Originally developed for my ESOL students, these activities are ideal for mainstream or ESOL classrooms. I have used these activities to teach and review main idea in grades 2-8. These activities are aligned with Common Core State Standards for Reading Informational Text in grades 3-5.
After completing these activities, your students will be more than ready to tackle main idea in grade-level texts. I start my students out with these activities, then move to paragraph level, and finally a full, grade-level appropriate article using the organizers included. Because this set of activities is designed to work with students at many levels, texts are not included and must be supplemented by the teacher, once students have completed preliminary activities.
