Thank you for taking a look at my “Main Idea Challenge” product! “Main idea” seems to be a tough concept for kids. I don’t know about you, but coming up with synonyms, concrete examples, & tips for finding or generating a “main idea” is not easy for me to do in a lesson. It comes with practice-lots of practice reading, thinking about what you are reading, and talking about what you are reading!
I did some thinking about “main idea.” The students are usually able to state the general topic of a passage after reading, but not much more.
I decided that a good way to build on what students “can do” would be to read 2 passages on the same topic, but with contrasting content. This “forces” kids to refine their thinking and consider what is in the passage, etc.
This packet includes 10 sets of worksheets, each with one topic, but two articles. After reading the articles and (perhaps) discussing the articles either in small groups or in a whole group discussion, students choose (from 6 given sentences) a main idea and two related details for each article, and two (POSSIBLY related and logical , but NOT part of the text) sentences that have no text evidence to support their idea.The sentences are cut out and glued in the appropriate category. A grayscale reduced size answer key is also inclded.
These materials and strategy have worked well for me, so I’m excited to share them with you! The reading level is most likely too difficult for 2nd grade, but the concept and content would be appropriate for direct instruction through read aloud. I have included two of the ten passages and worksheets in the preview so you can check the reading level and the type of thinking required to complete the material.
