These are two great games that can be used to help students master main idea! Be sure to check out the free preview!
Game 1- Main Idea Safari- students cut out "Details" cards and place in a sack or cup. Place 5 animal crackers anywhere you would like on your “Safari Game board”. When it is your turn, grab a “Details” card from the bag and read it aloud. If you or your partner have the “Main Idea” that goes with the “Details” covered , you can eat that cracker. The first person to eat all their crackers wins!
Game 2- Main Idea Bag Game-5 different bags so can be plkayed 5 different times! First cut up pictures that have been printed in color and place in a bag. Students gradually pull all the pictures out of the bag. After each picture we talk about what they see. Once all the pictures are out, come up with one or two words that are similar in all the pictures. That would go in the topic box. Next take the topic and turn it in to a sentence to make your main idea. Then look at each picture again and ask write one (Primary) to 3 (Advanced) to describe each picture. Those would go in each of the detail boxes.
This is also a great prewriting activity that students can use to write! Be sure to check out the preview and follow me and earn TPT credits that can be used for free products!!!
