My students love this challenging main idea and supporting details lesson/project!
I have used this as a small group reading lesson and as an independent assignment in my classroom. Students must analyze 18 details sentences to sort them by topics and then infer and write a main idea statement that summarizes their details. To include writing, students also must write their own closing sentence to complete their paragraph.
As an extension challenge, I also have my students create their own nonfiction text features (charts/diagrams/graphics with captions, etc.) to add more meaning to their mini-book paragraphs.
This is also a great project for practicing presentations, whether done by video or orally in front of the class.
For differentiation, you may also purchase the 4th/5th grade level of this project.
