Your students will love determining the main idea and details of a text with this fun reading craftivity! First, have your students read or listen to a story. I like having my students use their basal text or their leveled reader. You can use this pattern any time throughout the year, but my favorite times to use it are Spring, Valentine's Day, and Mother's Day.
After reading a story or nonfiction text, students will determine the main topic, main idea, and three details of the story. For students using more advanced text, you may want them to use this activity with a paragraph from the text instead of the entire text. Students will write the topic on the middle of the flower. They will then write the main idea and three details on each of the flower petals.
