1. Main Idea and Supporting Details Reading Passages (Non-Fiction) Students can practice identifying the main idea and details through color coding. This resource gives students multiple opportunities to practice recognizing text organization. When students can see the organization of a written paragraph, they can more easily identify the main idea.
In this resource you will find: 4 anchor charts, 3 main idea graphic organizers that can be applied to any text, color coded non-fiction practice passages that increase in difficulty, and an answer key.

*The easy passages ask students to find and restate the topic, main idea, and a detail. The harder passages ask them to find and restate the main idea, a detail, and an example of the detail.
2. Main Idea and Supporting Details Reading Passages ( 9 Fiction Passages)
*After several requests, I created this fiction version of my best selling Main Idea (Non-Fiction) resource. (The posters, example, and organizers are the same as those found in the Non-fiction version. My goal in creating this resource was to provide fiction passages for additional practice.)
3. “Main Idea of the Week” includes anchor posters, main idea graphic organizers that can be applied to any text, 37 holiday related passages that increase in difficulty, and an answer keys.
Finding the main idea is a key to improving reading comprehension, yet it is not a concept that is taught once an mastered. It requires ongoing practice to successfully apply this skill to different texts. Because of this, I created a resource that gradually builds in difficulty and provides a necessary scaffolding for students as they learn to master this skill throughout the year! The lex. levels and paragraph lengths gradually build from 630 – 980.
This resource gives students multiple opportunities to practice recognizing text organization. When students can see the organization of a written paragraph, they can more easily identify the main idea.
*The first 11 passages ask students to find and restate the topic, main idea, and a detail. The other 26 increase in difficulty, and ask them to find and restate the main idea, a detail, and a related example of that detail.
4. Main Idea Task Cards
Here are 24 non-fiction main idea task cards! A perfect low-prep activity for workshop or centers! The first set is easier and multiple choice. The second set has the same stories, but students are asked to identify and write out the main idea on their own. This provides more of a challenge for fourth grade and above.
I have also provided answer recording sheets for each set and an answer key so students can check their work.
