These Graphic organizers were created for my writing station. After teaching and revisiting functional text, this gives students needed ongoing practice to help solidify skills.
One set is specifically designed for recipes (first 2 slides). It includes a sequencing chart, cause and effect practice, synonym/antonym practice, main idea (5Ws), and it even has common vocabulary words that are in most recipes.
The second set is designed for use with images. I like to collect calendar photos or rich vivid magazine photos and laminate them. Students can use the pictures to write their ideas and create their own stories. This set is similar to the first 2 slides, except it has a comic strip for students to use their imagination as they create their own stories using random pictures, photos and images.
Using these graphic organizers is a great way to observe student's writing aptitude. I've used it as a group activity to investigate posters, flyers, menus, and websites. My students really enjoy working collaboratively using these graphic organizers to investigate. It can also be used as a fun and engaging student centered writing station!
