This lesson plan provides three stations for students to receive practice identifying the main idea of a passage. At station 1, students will read newspaper articles (available as a set in my store) and come up with headlines for them. At Station 2, students will complete an activity where they have ice cream cones with main ideas and ice cream scoops with supporting details on them. They must match the cones with the scoops. At Station 3 (seat work), they will read a nonfiction informational text ("Main Idea Leveled Passages Set" available in my store for free) and complete a graphic organizer identifying the topic, main idea, and supporting details (also available in my store).
