This activity helps students practice their ability to identify the main idea when reading Non-fiction texts. They will read the text you have chosen then come up with a "Catchy Title" and the main idea of each article. This allows them to practice their Alliteration, too!
There will be some additional prep on your part. As a way to keep this activity versatile for many different abilities, I chose not to include the actual articles. However, there are many sites you can seek out to accommodate all your learners in your class. you will need to cut the article's title off, glue the article to the pages I have included, and put the title either on the back of the page or a Check-It-Yourself page.
You may find articles at the following places:
- Read Works
- Scholastic News
- Time for Kids
This activity could be used in many different ways. You can use it as a Bell Ringer activity once a week, as a Rotation/Center activity, practice with a partner, and many other ways as well.
