Product Description
Do you need some engaging and low prep reading centers for main idea and supporting details?

This reading center resource includes ten spinner centers for practicing how to determine the main idea of a text and identify supporting details, as well as answering other questions related to main idea.

The students will read the text and determine the main idea of the text. Then they will spin the spinner to answer questions related to the main idea. To “play” the center, the students will use a pencil and a paper clip to spin the spinner. When they spin a question the first time, they will answer the question. If/when they spin that question again, they will prove their answers with evidence from the text.

The text-dependent questions require the students to do the following:
Determine the main idea of a text
Identify supporting details (repeated twice on some of the centers)
Determine if a provided detail supports the main idea
Determine the overall topic of the text
Create a title for the text
Select the sentence from the text that best represents the main idea

Answer keys for the centers and a recording sheet are included. I have also included an optional “Show What You Know” exit slip if you wish to further assess your students.

The topics included are:
Cheetahs
Posthumously famous writers and artists
Becoming a U.S. citizen
Salmon
Becoming a firefighter
Jobs in the food industry
Unusual sports
Race car safety
Women in the American Revolution
Sloths
