Main Idea and Supporting Details

These passages are designed to help students become confident identifying the main idea of a text and understanding how details support the main idea.

This file includes 10 passages. Each passage is presented twice. In the first set, the passages are followed by a simple graphic organizer in which students are prompted to write the main idea and three supporting details. (A full-page version of this organizer is also included.) In the second set, students answer multiple choice questions focusing on main idea and detail. A written response question is also included. The written response questions prompt students to use text-based evidence to address topics such as author’s purpose or deciding whether they agree with a statement.

The following passages are included:

Watering Plants
Lighting the Chicken Coop
Pain
Whistling
Bicycle Safety
Learning from Horses' Ears
Misnomers
Pencil Lead
Parking Spaces
Saving Energy

These activities support the following Common Core Standards:
ELA-Literacy.RL.1.2 - Identify the main topic and retell key details of a text.
ELA-Literacy.RI.2.6 - Identify the main purpose of a text, including what the author wants to answer, explain, or describe.
ELA-Literacy.RL.3.2 - Determine the main idea of a text; recount the key details and explain how they support the main idea.

Toward the beginning of first grade, I recommend reading these passages to students and discussing the answers together. At the end of first grade and early second grade, most students are able to complete these activities with support. These are appropriate independent work for students reading at or above a mid-second grade level.

I find that, with guided practice, kids quickly develop the skills they need to identify main idea and understand the relationship between the main idea and supporting details.

Thanks for stopping by and taking a look at this item!

Sincerely, Anne Gardner (NBCT, Literacy)
