Product Description
Do you need some engaging and low prep reading centers for main idea of nonfiction text? This resource includes 8 reading centers that your students will love!

Click here to see more Engaging Reading Centers for Upper Elementary.

This center resource contains eight reading centers to review and practice finding the main ideas and supporting details of multi-paragraph passages.

Click here to see my Main Idea Supplemental Resource that pairs well with these centers.

Included are eight games, each consisting of one nonfiction text and a game board with text-dependent questions.

The text-dependent questions require the students to do the following:
-Determine the main idea of a paragraph
-Determine the main idea of an entire passage
-Find a sentence that best describes the main idea of a paragraph
-Determine in which paragraph supporting details would best fit
-Determine new headings for paragraphs
-Determine which paragraph fits a heading

The topics included are:
Antibiotics
X-Rays
Reptiles in the Dinosaur Age
Famous Astronauts
Earth’s Layers
The Moon
Space Vehicles
Rock Climbing

There are a few options for using these centers:
Option 1: Print the passage for the students and give them to them at the beginning of the week. Have the students read the passage prior to going to the center. Then when they come to the center, they are ready to play the “game” and answer the questions. The passage could even be read whole group or sent home for homework.

Option 2: This option works well if the students will have a chance to go to the center 3 times a week. The first 1 or 2 days the students will read the passage and discuss. Then on the 2nd or 3rd day, the students will “play” the game.

I have also included several options for how the students will play the game for you to choose from as well as options for assessing the students. You can check these out as well as a closer look at the centers in the preview file.
