Description

Teaching main idea has never been so fun! Students will love this hands-on, highly visual comprehension tool as they learn about main idea and details! This main idea resource comes with THREE hands-on and original Main Idea Sliders to help students identify the main idea and details within a piece of text. These Main Idea Sliders contain highly visual cues that are printed directly onto the reading tool. Students slide a pony bead or a pompom bead up and down the pipe cleaner as they identify and state the main idea and details within a text. This hands-on tool makes small group reading, assessments, and intervention FUN!

THIS RESOURCE IS NOW DIGITAL, TOO!

You'll receive a link in the PDF to add the Google Slides to your Google Drive!

The pack comes with 20 coordinating reading passages that are specifically designed to coordinate with the Main Idea Sliders. Your students will read the short, manageable text three times for fluency. Then, they will draw and illustrate the main idea and three details for the text to demonstrate the comprehension skill and focus. Finally, let your students use the Main Idea Sliders to practice orally retelling what they learned in the text, too!

There are THREE versions of the templates. One version has visual cues using a pizza theme. The piece of pizza is the main idea. The details are the toppings that go onto the pizza: mushroom, peppers, and pepperoni. The second version has a s’more theme. The entire s’more is the main idea. The details are the ingredients that make up a s’more: a marshmallow, chocolate, and a graham cracker. The star template is perfect to use with older readers or readers who are transitioning from the need to use visual cues. Choose the template that you like best, OR, use all three and mix-it up throughout the school year! Your students will LOVE using this reading manipulative!

The pack also comes with coordinating posters in both black and white, and color. Additional differentiated main idea graphic organizers that directly align with the reading sliders are included, too! There are four differentiated writing lines for the graphic organizers that match each visual main idea slider. Your students can practice writing the main idea and details for the passages using one of the graphic organizers.

This pack is perfect for first grade and second graders who are at-risk or struggling with main idea and reading fluency. readers and beginning of the year first graders. It would also be ideal for any at-risk student who requires intense reading intervention instruction and practice. Special intervention teachers will love the hands-on, visual appeal of these passages, as well as homeschooling families! While kindergarteners could not read the passage on their own, it could be read aloud and used within a small group within the second half of the school year, since the comprehension section simply requires students to draw the main idea and details to show their understanding.

Great for small groups, intervention, homework, morning work, additional reading re-teaching and practice, and even as a retelling assessment!
