I like having tri-folds to help introduce or reinforce a skill. I use these a lot in whole group and in small group. Lots of practice with a skill!

Learning Objective

Students will read nonfiction passages and identify the main idea and key supporting details. Students will select the main idea from a list of multiple choice options.

Description

These four print-and-go trifolds target the skill of main idea and supporting details. Use these main idea trifolds over the course of 4 days to provide targeted instruction or intervention on this topic.

As I was creating these trifolds, I pictured myself using them with small groups of students. Specifically, I envisioned sitting around a table with a group of students who needed some targeted intervention and additional opportunities to practice identifying main idea and supporting details. That being said, however, you can also successfully use these trifolds in a large group setting or assign them as independent work.

These main idea trifolds progress from basic to more complex. Answer keys are included, along with additional teacher notes for EACH trifold. CHECK OUT THE PREVIEW to get a good feel for what you will get if you choose to purchase this resource.

Trifold #1: Students differentiate between a topic and a main idea statement. Four practice passages are included where the main idea is in italics, and students must underline the three supporting details in the passage.

Trifold #2: Students use a graphic organizer to display the main idea sentence and the three supporting details. Two practice passages are included in this trifold.

Trifold #3: Students see (through three different passages) that the main idea might be stated at the beginning of a reading passage, it might be stated near the end of a reading passage, or it might need to be inferred. Five practice passages are included where students identify the main idea and supporting details. The presence of different text structures makes this trifold a bit more challenging, as well.

Trifold #4: The main objective for this trifold is expose students to multiple choice questions related to identifying the main idea and supporting details. Students will likely see questions like these on standardized tests. This trifold includes 3 different passages and 8 multiple choice questions.
