Main Idea is an important concept in the Common Core Standards for Informational Text. I created these sentence prompt sticks for my students to reference in our discussions of Informational Text because I found it wasn't easy for my students to express how they knew what the Main Idea was. We are expecting our students to discuss Informational Text and explain their reasoning, but this can difficult when our students are more comfortable talking about their reading of Fiction. They have so much more modeling by adults of how to talk about Fiction texts, but not as much modeling of discussing Informational Text. Once the procedure was taught in large group, practiced in small group, and modeled repeatedly by me, my students were using the sentence stems naturally. We still use these in our Guided Reading Groups.
