There is no more challenging concept to teach than finding main ideas and details! We've all seen all the graphic organizers (e.g., boxes and bullets, and bubble maps). We've all tried the different metaphors like the house and table only to find ourselves repeating directions and steps over and over again.
Well, look no further!! In collaboration with my second-grade students, I believe that we have cracked the code on how to help children develop a conceptual understanding of how to organize new information into main ideas and details using buckets!! Think of every topic as a cloud. Every topic cloud has numerous facts it can rain down, and in order to hold all those facts in our brains, we need just the right sized buckets to organize, and capture them! Plus this strategy works for both reading and writing!
Enclosed in this bundle find editable products including: 1. a step by step PPT to introduce the main idea buckets strategy, 2. two graphic organizers for recording main ideas and details using buckets, and 3. a generic research packet using this strategy that can work with any topic. We finally have a way to help students generate main idea sentences that are just right, and a way for them to tangibly hold on to facts and visualize main ideas!!! I hope these resources work as well for you as they have for us!
