I needed a way to teach my students how to find the main idea and the key details. Using the idea of a door as the main idea of a text and keys to unlock the door helped them to make sense of the important parts of a paragraph or text.
There are 4 posters to display that explain main idea, key details, topic and topic sentence.
There are 8 topic doors. Students make a prediction based on pictures what the topic of each door is. They write a reason for their prediction. After they write and discuss, they open the door to reveal the topic behind the door. My students love this activity!
Included also are several worksheets to use to help find main idea and key details in paragraphs.
Last is a writing craft. Students write a main idea on a keyring and 3 key details on keys. This is a nice item to display on a bulletin board.
