Description

Help your students identify the main topics or main ideas of multi-paragraph texts. While reading about winter subjects, students practice close reading skills.

It is challenging for primary students to identify main ideas, topic sentences and supporting details. Activities in this unit are focused on helping them find the important idea in each paragraph and understanding how the topic sentences go together under one main idea.

There are matching activities, graphic organizers and text-dependent questions. Students are asked to organizer and write a paragraph using information from the text.

The lessons can be done individually or as a unit. Some lessons require more understanding of main topic and supporting details. They could be used as:
* a whole class activity and point of discussion
* could be done individually
* as part of a small group activity.

Discussion of answers is important as students learn to read critically and answer text-dependent questions.

This unit is slightly more difficult than the fall Main Idea unit. For example, in this unit, many choices in questions are true facts, but only one will support the main idea in a paragraph or passage. Note: The information about “Penguins” is included and expanded in the packet, “Penguins.”

In addition to the short informational write, there is also a quick opinion graphic organizer and writing frame.

An assessment is provided.

Some blank graphic organizers are included to be used with any lesson.
