Description
This digital main idea resource features four complete lessons. It is compatible with Google Slides. The lessons feature both instructional slides AND practice slides where students complete a task related to the instructional slides. Use these main idea activities over the course of four days to provide targeted instruction for your students. They can be used as a large group activity, in a small group setting, OR as an engaging self-paced reading lesson.
The slides in each lesson progress from basic to more complex. Answer keys are included. CHECK OUT THE PREVIEW to see some of the slides in these lessons.
Lesson #1: Introduction to Main Idea (9 slides)
-This lesson includes three instructional slides. This lesson begins by differentiating between TOPIC and MAIN IDEA. On the remaining two instructional slides, students are presented with a nonfiction passage where the main idea and supporting details are highlighted.
-The lesson contains five practice slides. Students complete two tasks that require them to differentiate between the topic and the main idea. Then, three practice passages are included where the main idea is highlighted in yellow, and students must highlight three supporting details in the passage.
-The other slide is the title slide.
Lesson #2: Introduction to the Main Idea Graphic Organizer (11 slides)
-This lesson includes six instructional slides. The lesson begins with introducing students to the ice cream cone graphic organizer. Then, a reading passage is presented, and students watch as the graphic organizer is filled in with a main idea statement and three supporting details.
-The lesson contains four practice slides. Students read two nonfiction passages and then fill in the graphic organizer for each.
Lesson #3: Explicitly-Stated Main Idea vs. Inferred Main Idea (11 slides)
-This lesson includes five instructional slides. On the instructional slides, the same passage is presented in three different ways. On the first version, the main idea is stated at the beginning of the passage. On the second version, the main idea is stated at the end of the passage. On the third version, the main idea is not explicitly stated; the reader must infer the main idea.
-The lesson contains five practice slides. These slides feature five different nonfiction passages. The main idea alternates between being stated and inferred. For each passage, students must identify the main idea. Students must also identify supporting details by highlighting the text.
Lesson #4: Putting It All Together/Test Prep (6 slides)
The main objective for this final main idea lesson is to expose students to multiple-choice questions related to identifying the main idea and supporting details. Students will likely see questions like these on standardized tests. This lesson includes three nonfiction reading passages. Eight multiple-choice questions are included in this lesson. All of the questions are related to the main idea and supporting details.
**IMPORTANT NOTE!**
This digital lesson resource is an expanded version of my printable main idea trifolds. The practice activities in my printable trifolds are the same as the practice activities in these digital lessons. The main difference between the two versions is that this digital version offers complete lessons with 13 additional instructional slides that are not included in the printable tri-folds. I really want to stress the overlap to teachers who have previously purchased my main idea trifolds so that they are aware of this overlap before they purchase this expanded, alternate version.
