One of the most difficult but useful skills to teach young students is how to determine the main idea. This unit uses real pictures for beginning readers to use visual cues to help young children make sense of text.

This unit contains:

  • 26 full color photos with original stories and multiple choice answers
  • Answer key
  • Main idea poster

*As seen in the TPT newsletter!* Once your students become adept at understanding visual cues and how they relate to the correct sentence the next step is to add a short reading passage with a picture and main idea answer choices. They should not be able to choose the correct answer without reading the passage. Therefore, the picture is only one clue to the main idea. They will use the context clues from the passage, plus the visual from the picture to determine the main idea from the answer choices. This improves critical thinking, language processing, and reading ability.

The following reading passages are an easier reading level because the student needs to feel confident and fluent before looking at the answers.
