Determining the main idea and key details of an expository text is an important skill because it helps students remember important information as they read. Further, as students master this skill, they should also appreciate that the bulk of the informational text is made of key details that support or explain a main idea or main ideas. Understanding this heirarchy of information is critical to comprehension of informational text. These skills are stepping stones to more meaningful and deeper text analysis (e.g., tracing an author's argument to his or her claims, determining which claims are supported with facts, evaluating bias, etc.) that students will encounter throughout the year.
This resource includes everything you will need to practice main idea and key details with your students! I’ve included THREE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF EACH PASSAGE for you to easily differentiate in your classroom! There are also thinking maps, multiple choice questions, and short-answer questions for your students to practice main idea and key details.

This resource contains ten differentiated informational text passages. There are three levels of each passage so you can easily differentiate with your students. The levels are based on word count and Lexile levels, which can be found in the top left corner of each passage.
