Main idea and details can be tricky for young learners. These short reading comprehension passages are designed to help students become confident identifying the main idea of a text and understanding how details support the main idea.
The questions are designed to make kids look closely at the text and also go back to find answers in the passage.
This file includes 15 short passages. Each passage is presented twice.
In the first version, students read the passage and then answer two multiple choice questions and one short answer question. The first multiple choice question with each passage asks about main idea. The second multiple choice question consistently asks about a supporting detail. The short answer (written response) questions include topics such as author’s purpose and distinguishing fact from detail.
In the second version, students identify, underline and then write the main idea. They then complete a simple graphic organizer by filling in three supporting details. (A full page version of this graphic organizer is also included.)
The passages in this file focus on the following ideas:
Grass is a very important plant.
The spittlebug makes a special house.
Animals lay eggs in many places.
People use glass in many ways.
Motorists need to read road signs.
Joe is a good student.
Nathan takes good care of his cat!
We are going to make sundaes!
Many things are filled with air.
It was a very rainy day!
A farmer has lots of work to do.
Some words have more than one meaning.
Ella loves purple!
Jack loves black.
Tornadoes can be very dangerous!
There is a lot to see at the zoo!
These activities support the following Common Core Standards:
ELA-Literacy.RI.1.2 - Identify the main topic and retell key details of a text.
ELA-Literacy.RI.1.1 – Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
ELA-Literacy.RL.1.1 - Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
ELA-Literacy.RL.1.2 - Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson.
I find that, with guided practice, kids quickly develop the skills they need to identify main idea and understand the relationship between the main idea and supporting details.
** Please note: The concepts and topics shared in this file are also included in my Main Idea Build and Learn Houses
Though there are some color images included, the clipart in this file prints well on a black and white printer or in grayscale.
Thanks so much for stopping by and taking a look!
