Help your students review and practice close reading skills while reading about interesting science and social studies topics:
Traveling to Mars,
The Taj Mahal,
Cherry Blossom Festivals.
Although the focus of this unit is learning about the main idea, there is some work included on using text features and finding word meaning.
These lessons are purposely short and designed to supplement
or review regular classroom instruction. Most can be completed in one or two 30 minute periods.
These questions are progressively more complex and require students to read both questions and answers carefully in preparation for taking standardized tests. In many cases, there is more than one true answer, requiring them to look back in the text to find the correct choice. The more difficult lessons ask them to understand main ideas of multi-paragraph texts as well as key ideas and supporting facts for smaller sections in preparation for taking standardized tests. A short 2 page assessment is provided.
(Because I teach main idea all year, I have put together three different packets focusing on main idea. This is the third packet in a series. For students who have less background, there are two easier versions in my store with more step by step instructions and hints).
I have made these lessons with 2nd grade in mind, however, they could also be appropriate for 3rd grade review. They can be done as a unit or as individual pieces although they do get progressively more difficult. The articles can be used for review for a whole class activity, for small group instruction or for homework.
Each lesson includes:
One or two pages of text
A Word Meaning Worksheet – students find and write meaing
Questions and/or Graphic Organizers
Some lessons also have a short writing exercise
20 Student Pages; 15 Answer Keys
