Identifying the main idea of a text can be a difficult concept for young learners to grasp. That's why it's a good idea to introduce this concept with pictures first. The object of the game is to be the first player to find the four detail cards that match the main idea shown on the card.
6 main idea game cards (home, classroom, park, farm, beach, space)
24 detail cards (4 cards for each main idea)
Color and black and white versions are available.
To play, spread the detail cards face-down on a playing surface. Each player then grabs a main idea card.
Players take turns flipping over a detail card. If the detail card matches the player’s main idea card, it can be placed in one of the boxes. If the detail card does not go with the main idea, it must be returned.
Play continues until one player completes his or her main idea card.
An alternate way to play is to simply match the detail cards to the main idea cards.
