This product provides supplemental resources that address concepts for Next Generation Science Standard MS-LS2-5 Ecosystems - Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics: Evaluate competing design solutions for maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem services.
This product focuses on requiring students to evaluate solutions and agencies that attempt to provide solutions to the task of fighting the loss of biodiversity in nature.
The product includes a "dissection" of the standard for student use and a "Biodiversity" content poster/handout for background. There are two math-related activities that help students understand how human population growth affects biodiversity.
The first evaluative exercise provides a list of 20 design solutions and an activity requiring students to select 3 of them and evaluate them. An evaluation form, directions for writing a evaluation report, and a scoring rubric are provided.
The second evaluative exercise points students to different eco-agencies and what they are doing to fight biodiversity loss. Students are asked to research two of these agencies and complete and evaluation forms.
The final project involves students in designing their own design solutions by creating an eco-agency, defining its vision/mission, and the issues it will address. They also create an eco-label for the agency and a poster to advertise what they do.
