My students really understood how to make 10 to add after creating posters with partners to visualize and explain the math concepts. Print out 15 problems on legal sized paper asking students to make 10 to add: 8+7=10+5. Pass out markers so they can record their work inside ten frames showing the different addends and how they are regrouped as a ten plus statement. Then, ask students to explain how they worked through their problem to other students either whole group or in small groups. My class "got it" after creating a poster and explaining their reasoning to their peers.
