Students utilizing real money is the most meaningful way to learn how to count, getting them prepared for the real word. When you are ready to begin having students utilize real money, send home the attached letter requesting coins from families to use for the school year. The attached dollar template can be used for your students to practice counting bills.
With this center, students get ready to solve word problems
involving money by first practicing creating money amounts. They work with a partner, using coins and bills to create money amounts on piggy bank cards. If they can accurately make the amount in different ways, they get to draw one step of their How to Draw a Pig form.
After they strengthen their money counting skills, they move on to solving word problems with money in this independent practice, demonstrating their understanding of this standard.
