This five week unit is designed to engage secondary school English, Business, or Media Studies students as they create a monetized YouTube video and start earning revenue off their creative endeavour.
Student learning is scaffolded as they move through the following sequences: Analyzing YouTube video success stories and failures; Studying verbal and non-verbal oral communication styles; Creating --and recognizing the robust capacity of-- a Google account; Choosing a relevant topic and planning a video with an audience in mind; Recording the video or screencast and posting it on YouTube;
Monetizing the video and setting-up Google AdSense; Attracting an Audience; Checking and assessing the video's analytics; Writing a final reflection; and Sharing the video with the class.
The unit is comprised of a Project Checklist and rubric.
It covers Oral Communications and Media Studies overall English curriculum expectations in Ontario.
Students love this assignment so much that many often continue to produce videos for their YouTube channels. Some have developed large followings and decent residual earnings (for Minecraft reviews, for example).
You won't be disappointed!
