Notes for the teacher:
This booklet series takes your students on a journey through number sense and operations. This book can be used to meet the needs of your class by allowing students the freedom to choose the operations they want to work with OR you can assign operations that you know your students need practice with. Younger students can use counters to help them. Please see the notes below before you begin use of this series.
*Each level in this series increases a bit in difficulty.
*In Level One, students create expressions that equal 0 through 12. (With all levels, you can allow freedom to choose operations or say (for example), “You must use subtraction.”
*In Level Two, students create expressions that equal numbers in each decade up to 110 and also dabble with negative numbers.
*In Level Three, students are required to use expressions containing more than one operation to equal each given number.
*Use these booklets as a whole-class lesson, as a math center activity, or as work to do if other math work is completed. Copy the pages into a stapled booklet for each level.
*To ensure that students are not working incorrectly, create a “license” to progress by requiring students to be checked and “starred” by you before they move to the next page.
*Be on the look-out for cool patterns that students find (such as 26-1, 27-2, 28-3… for the number “25”) and fun expressions that they use. Share these cool findings with the other students so that they can learn from each other.
