Why I Use This Resource

With the new standards, students are asked to use a variety of strategies to add. Making a ten to add is difficult for students to learn- especially for those students who struggle with math to begin with. It was important to me to find a way to make this strategy accessible for ALL of my students.
I was frustrated by the lack of extra practice items available from my math program and wanted to create something that would allow me to meet the varying needs of my students. While the end goal is the same, how we get there needed to be different. I needed materials with enough support for my struggling learners as well as materials with more of a challenge for the students who needed to be pushed. And so- these differentiated practice pages were born!
Using these resources has made such a difference in my classroom. The options allow me to address my students’ different abilities with ease! Through using these materials, ALL of my students are able to learn and apply the Make a Ten strategy to find sums independently!

Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
