Product Description
This is an integrated social studies and Language Arts unit. Students will look at a variety of maps of Beacon Hill in the 1800's to "SEE" how land from three hills in Boston were taken to "fill in" land for the further development of the "town" of Boston. Students will be able to compare what Beacon Hill looked like then and now, studying the park and brick architecture that makes Beacon Hill unique. Robert McCloskey based his famous story, Make Way for Ducklings, in the area of Beacon Hill, particularly the Boston Public Gardens. I have acquainted teachers with fun facts about this famous park students will want to know as the ducks take their tour to find a good home to live. I have included questions where students will be able to make connections to the story. I have also included many technological sites students can use to visually see the tour the ducks take along the east coast of the United States, along with sketches Robert McCloskey used in his books for students to try their hands at sketching! As a culmination of this study, students will draw their own maps and keys of the Boston Public Gardens with a key, showing the flora and fauna, the statues, and beautiful places in the first botanical garden in the United States!
