Product Description
Paper BMI calculator

This handout provides a "spark" for a BMI calculation activity.

Usually, to figure out their Body-Mass index, students are either
asked to use a mathematical formula and an electronic calculator or to
use large color-coded charts.

The formula for BMI is:
703 x weight (lb)
---------------------------------- = BMI (kg/m2)
height (in) x height (in)

In this activity, students will build a paper BMI calculator which they
can take home.

For Younger Students:
The first calculator requires the student to slide one number
line alone the other untill student's weight and height are aligned.
Then the marker arrow will point to the student's BMI, similar to
looking up BMI in a large color table.

The second calculator requires the student to slide a number line
until the marker matches the student's height. Then, BMI can be read for
the student's weight, similar to the tables provided by
the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.

Building the BMI calculator

To build the calculator, one needs to make three straight cuts and two
straight folds. The assembly instructions are provided on the reverse
side of the calculator.
