Rhythm sticks are found all around the world and are great for musical play. Hawaiian rhythm sticks, called pu’illi, offer a unique twist on this musical activity that can be used in any classroom or homeschool environment.
This make-your-own craft pdf gives the background of Hawaiian pu’ili and shows an easy way to create these rhythm sticks from recycled materials. The activity also shares some of the basic moves used in playing pu’ili as part of the hula tradition and shows some simple rhythm games that can be part of music class or a study of Hawaiian and Polynesian cultures.
