In this activity, students will create their own survey question, collect data in a tally chart, and then make a bar graph and pictograph. This lesson goes along with Virginia learning standard SOL 2.8 which is data collection and graph making. I also send it home as a study guide so parents can go over the different parts of each graph to help prepare them for the test. This could also be used as a math station after it is done as a whole group.
I find that giving students an example and modeling before each step is the key to success. I give the example survey question, "What is your favorite type of ice cream?" We also write some examples of other survey questions on the board for strugglers.
