Solving crosswords can be a useful vocabulary tool, but even more fun and challenging is making your own. By making crosswords students not only have to remember and interpret word meanings, but they also have restate definitions in a meaningful way. And while students love solving puzzles, they become thrilled by the challenge of creating their own, which can be a puzzle in itself.
Included here is a handout with the step by step process for creating a crossword, as well as two sizes of graph paper (with the inside lines lightened so it is easier to see what they have written). Also included is a simple sample crossword and key for students who are less familiar with how a crossword works.
