Middle school students are given a mixture, and must make a plan to separate it. It's challenging! Basic knowledge of density is required. Perfect for units covering characteristic properties of matter, density, or pure substances versus mixtures.
Students are given a write-up about a "soup" that their annoying little nephew has made. Given some household tools and materials, they must first DRAW how the soup will settle out (based on density), and then DEVISE A PLAN to separate the "soup" with the materials provided. (This is a paper-based activity - no actual separation occurs.) The instructions take up a HALF SHEET, so you make half the copies.
